Two different things

People often use "website" and "app" interchangeably. They solve different problems, and cost and effort differ accordingly.

A business website

Mainly provides information: who you are, what you do, how to contact you. Visitors read, browse and perhaps submit a form. Content changes occasionally.

Good for: introducing your business, showing services, building trust and being found on search.

A web application

Lets users do things: log in, create records, upload data, track orders, make payments and see personalized information. It has accounts, permissions and a database working behind the scenes.

Good for: customer portals, internal tools, booking systems, dashboards and workflows.

A quick test

Ask what the visitor does. If they mostly read, it is a website. If they log in and make changes, it is an application.

Where they overlap

Many businesses need both: a public website for information, and a private application for customers or staff. They can share design and a login.

What affects cost

Websites are usually simpler and cheaper. Applications involve logic, security, data storage and more testing, which increases effort.

Do you need a mobile app?

Sometimes a responsive web application that works well on a phone is enough. Native mobile apps make sense when you need device features or heavy daily use.

Start with the need

Describe what users should be able to do and what you want to track. The right type of solution follows from that.

Think about maintenance

Both need hosting, updates and security care. Ask about ongoing support before you start.
